Libros de Niños (Children's books)
In this project, we expanded and practiced our vocabulary by writing short stories in Spanish. In order to hold us accountable and create real-world application, our books will be sent to Nicaragua through a program called Seeds of Learning (SOL). SOL gives books to children in rural areas who don’t usually get a complete education. We were given four weeks to write a story and create illustrations.
I wrote my story about a family who moves from Nicaragua to Colorado and sees snow for the first time. I wanted my story to involve snow, because it is something that is foreign to the students that will read my book in Nicaragua. My first idea was just to explain different weather, but I decided to focus on winter and snow because it is more educational. I also decided to write it so that the family moved to Colorado from Nicaragua, which makes it more relatable to the audience.
I hope that when students read it, they will be able to develop their reading skills while expanding their knowledge of the world. I also hope that their imaginations will grow, and they will want to learn more about other countries.
