Design Your Own Art Project
For the Design Your Own Art Project, each student was given the opportunity to pursue a field of art that they were interested in. We had about four weeks to research our topic and make a piece of art. I chose to study color field, and my final product was a painting.
Artist's Statement:
Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.
-Wassily Kandinsky
My art piece is a color field painting comprised of shades of blue, yellow, and green. Before this project, I had not heard of color field painting. Color field is an avenue of abstract art, yet it is based around color without a specific subject. I have recently been intrigued by the use of color in painting, but I was unaware of the name for this type of art. For this painting, I researched color theory, color field, and how color affects our emotions. I chose calm, pleasing colors to relax yet intrigue the viewers. The work of painters such as Wassily Kandinsky and Clyfford Still and their use of color as form is very appealing to me. My inspiration for this piece came from these artists, and the simplicity of a clean canvas and bright, enticing colors.

Pre-Assessment: This is a painting from a humanities project completed earlier this year. It is my pre-assessment because it is the last painting that I have done, and it was a representation of my skill level before I began research for my art project.

Final Product: This is the painting that I completed as a study of color field. It is titled Color Study I.

The Documentary Project
Project Description: The Documentary Project was a cross-curricular project between Digital Arts and Physics. The objective was to create a 5-7 minute documentary regarding an environmental or scientific issue in our area. I chose to work with Acacia B.. We created our documentary on organic and local foods. To begin this project, we decided on our topic and then immediately began creating a storyboard. This was the takeoff of our project. We then began scheduling interviews and collecting b-roll footage. The most helpful resources that assisted us in this project were other documentaries. By watching other, professional documentaries, we gained ideas about how to make our documentary look more professional and accurate.. We were given a lot of time and resources to make our documentaries as professional and excellent as possible. I think our documentary turned out very well and I feel proud of the time and effort that we put into it.
Project Reflection:
Inquiry Questions:
1. How is art used in everyday life?
Architecture. Sculptures. Clothes. Furniture. Art, although not always in it's traditional forms, is all around us. We rely on art to make life interesting and practical. Our homes are designed by an architect, who is essentially an artist of buildings. Our clothes are another form of art that were carefully designed and produced. We are surrounded by art that is not technically "art." On top of the non-conventional art that decorates our lives, paintings and drawings are another part of life. Imagine walking into a room with no photographs, paintings, or images, only blank walls. That would be very boring! Hanging traditional art on our walls is exciting and makes spaces more inviting. Art is used to amuse us, and it also provides comfort and has practical uses for everyday life.
2. How and why is art used as a vehicle for communication?
As we are aware, there are hundreds of languages in our diverse world. Even saying hello can be complicated. However, art is subjective and objective at the same time. The viewer, no matter what nationality or language they speak, can interpret art in their own way. Yet art is also fixed, it was intended to convey a message. Altogether, you can view art regardless of what language you speak. Messages can be conveyed through art without words, allowing all people to view and interpret it.
3. Why do Artists Produce Preliminary Plans? (sketches, brainstorms, storyboards, etc?)
Unfortunately, no one is perfect the first time they try something. No one scores a 3-pointer in basketball the first time they hold a basketball; no one can write a novel right after they learn to write. The same applies to art. If you wish to make a visually pleasing art piece, first you will need to make a plan, a preliminary sketch or storyboard to lay out a design and get an idea of how you would like your art to look. Artists produce preliminary plans to ensure that they don't waste materials, and that they are successful in creating the art piece that they have envisioned.

Mini Project on Stop Motion Animation
|
Project Description:
This mini project on stop motion animation lasted for about two weeks. We started by learning photography composition rules, such as the golden rule and the rule of thirds. The objective was to shoot a stop motion animation video using photography composition rules and lighting. We also learned how to automate batches of photos in Photoshop, and then use Adobe Flash to animate all the photos into a moving video. The video that my partner and I created, displayed to the left, was composed of about 250 still images. We used an iPhone to shoot the images, and found that this was beneficial because we could take photos faster than would have been possible using a digital camera. Reflection: The topic of our environmental documentary is organic foods and the benefits of organic eating. We would like to try to use the stop motion animation technique for animated drawing on a white board. We would do this in two ways; writing titles or text that will help structure our film, and demonstrating the effects that pesticides and chemicals have on the human body by drawing a human body and the major organs. |
