Why I chose Animas High School
Here in Durango, CO there are three high schools, each with different views and missions: Durango High School, Big Picture High School, and Animas High School. In my opinion, Animas High School has outstanding characteristics that make it superior to the other institutions. First of all, AHS is the only high school that is designed around the principle of project based learning. I attended Mountain Middle School through 8th grade which is also a project based learning school, and before that, Durango Montessori. So, it made sense to continue with project based learning, which is the style that is comfortable and enjoyable for me. Animas is also a free charter school, meaning that the class size is limited and students are chosen in a random lottery. This means that classes have less students, which creates a better learning environment for my peers and I. Another thing that drew me to Animas is the academic rigor. Animas was designed to be a college preparatory school so the curriculum is challenging and prepares students for experiences beyond high school. Animas is a great school with engaging projects, strong and tight knit culture, and rigorous academics. It is these factors and many more that led me to choose Animas High School.
